Privacy Policy — Maclen Magnuson Beta Reader Program
1. What we collect
- Application: name, email, optional mobile number, country, time zone, communication language and book language, how you heard about the program (source and network), your relationship to the author, the age ranges of your children (never their names, schools or birth dates), and your consent choices (SMS, terms and privacy, with date and version).
- Participation: your enrollment status and dates, reading-window reminders sent, the feedback you send by chapter (portal, SMS or email), your questionnaire answers, and whether you withdrew.
- Technical: a hashed form of your personal access code (we don’t store the code itself in our database), the first characters of the code for support, the reader code shown in the watermark, and timestamps of portal actions. The portal loads no advertising or analytics trackers.
- Listening (optional): If you choose to listen to a chapter, we record only that you requested that chapter’s audio and when. Audio files are delivered from our web host (Hostinger); we do not track how much you listen.
- Honorarium (private circle only, and only if you claim it): the email address the Amazon.com Gift Card is sent to (by default, your application email) and the record of the gift card sent.
2. Why we use it
To run the beta program: review applications, admit readers in waves, deliver the Manuscript by chapter, send program messages (email and, if you opt in, SMS), collect and analyze feedback to edit the books, deliver honoraria to private-circle readers who claim them, prevent leaks (watermark) and keep records of consent. We don’t sell your data or use it for advertising. Where EU/UK law applies, our legal bases are your consent (SMS, testimonials), performance of our arrangement with you (participation and honorarium) and our legitimate interest in editing the book and protecting the Manuscript.
3. SMS and mobile information
SMS are optional and sent only if you checked the SMS box. Message frequency varies (up to 10 messages per month during your reading window). Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP (or BAJA) to opt out, HELP (or AYUDA) for help. No mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. Information sharing to subcontractors in support services, such as customer service, is permitted. All other use case categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.
4. Service providers (processors) we use
- HighLevel (LeadConnector): CRM, hosting of the program’s public pages and forms (including the landing pages and the launch-notice form), contact records and sending of program emails and SMS.
- Twilio: the carrier connection for text messages from +1 385-250-0250.
- Google (Apps Script, Sheets, Drive; optionally Looker Studio): the program’s backend database, the service behind the reader page (chapter delivery and feedback) and editorial reports.
- Hostinger (Hostinger International Ltd.): hosting of the reader page at lee.maclenmagnuson.com. The page is static: it displays the chapters and sends your feedback directly to our Google backend, so Hostinger does not store what you read or write. Your personal access code travels only in the part of the link after the “#”, which your browser does not send to Hostinger’s server. Like any web host, Hostinger may keep standard server logs (such as IP address, browser and device type (user agent), date and time, and the page requested) for security and operations, under its own terms.
- Email: HighLevel sends program emails and the launch-notice email from our mailbox [email protected], which is hosted by Hostinger (Hostinger International Ltd.); Hostinger handles the message, your email address and standard delivery logs only to deliver it. Replies are received by HighLevel’s email system (LC Email / Mailgun) so we can read them in our CRM.
- Amazon (Amazon.com Gift Cards): delivery of the honorarium gift card, only if you claim it. Amazon receives only the email address the gift card is sent to.
These providers process data on our behalf under their own terms and security measures. Data is stored and processed in the United States. If you live outside the U.S., your data is transferred there.
5. Who sees your data
Only the author and the designated program operator see identifiable participant data and conversations. Other readers never see your data or your feedback.
6. How long we keep it
Identifiable data is kept until the program closes plus 90 days. After that, we replace your name, email and phone in the program database with “[deleted]” and keep your feedback only in pseudonymized form for editorial work. Testimonials you separately authorized are kept as long as that permission lasts.
7. Your rights and deletion requests
You can ask to access, correct, export or delete your data, or withdraw a consent, by writing to [email protected]. We answer within 30 days. When we delete your data, we:
- revoke your access link;
- delete or anonymize your rows in the program database and reports;
- clear the program fields and tags on your record in HighLevel;
- review exported files.
Because Google Sheets keeps a version history that can retain old values, full deletion also means we create a fresh copy of the program spreadsheet without that history and move the old one to the trash. We tell you when this is done. Deleting your whole HighLevel contact (for example, if you also bought from us) is a separate request we can also handle. Depending on where you live (for example the EU/UK or California), you may also have the right to object, to restrict processing and to complain to your data-protection authority.
8. Children
The program is for adults (18+). We do not collect identifying information about children; we only ask for age ranges.
9. Security
Personal access links are long random codes stored only in hashed form. Access can be revoked at any time. Secrets are kept in protected server settings, never in our documents or in the browser. No system is 100 % secure; if a breach affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.
10. Public call applicants and launch-notice list
This section covers people who use the public pages for the books (https://maclenmagnuson.com/the-present-dad-beta and https://maclenmagnuson.com/papa-presente-beta). Everything else in this policy also applies to them unless this section says otherwise.
Public call application: name, email, reading language (Spanish or English), the perspective you come from (for example parent, caregiver or simply interested reader), what caught your attention about the book, your availability to read within 21 days of receiving access, your confirmation that you are 18 or older, your acknowledgement of this policy and that applying does not guarantee a place (with date and version), the page or campaign you came from (a source code such as “lp_en”) and, if it is captured automatically, your time zone. We do not ask for a phone number or for any information about your children. We use this only to review applications, select readers for upcoming rounds and contact you about your application. If you are selected, the participation data in section 1 applies. Public call readers are unpaid: no honorarium data is collected. Applying does not subscribe you to the Dadly Dose newsletter or to any other list. If you are not selected, we keep your application until the program closes plus 90 days so we can consider you for a later round; you can ask us to delete it sooner at any time.
Launch-notice list (“Notify me”): your email, the edition you want to hear about (Spanish or English), the page or campaign you came from, and the record of your consent (the checkbox you ticked, its version and the date and time). We use it only to send you one email when the book is published. It is not part of the beta program and not a newsletter subscription: we do not add you to the Dadly Dose newsletter, to the beta program or to any marketing sequence. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us at [email protected]. We keep this data until 30 days after the launch email is sent, or until you unsubscribe, whichever comes first; then we remove the launch-notice fields and tags from your record (your contact record itself is kept only if you have another relationship with us, for example a purchase).
Legal bases (EU/UK): your consent for the launch-notice list (you can withdraw it at any time); for public call applications, steps you ask us to take before a possible participation arrangement and our legitimate interest in selecting readers for the book.
Website data: the public pages are hosted by HighLevel, which may set technical cookies and record standard visit data (such as IP address, browser, the page visited and the referring link or campaign) to operate the forms, for security and for basic visit counts. We do not place advertising pixels on these pages. We also use Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) on these public pages to measure visits and where they come from; it may set analytics cookies. We don’t use it for advertising, and the reader portal doesn’t load it.
11. Changes and contact
